Title: New European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) – Will our Personal Data be Better Protected?

A robust personal data protection regime is entering into force on May 25 this year in all EU member states. Companies and public sector bodies are getting more and more nervous, like in the time when we all expected that Millennium Bug would destroy all our computers. But are the changes really going to be so drastical? Not really. If data controllers followed the current Directive 95/46/EC rules, adaptation to new ones would not be so hard. Better question is whether data subjects, individuals, are going to have stronger and more comprehensive rights. Law is always lagging behind modern information technologies and we are losing many battles regarding our privacy. Do we want to lose the war? Did GDPR give us the power to fight against big data controllers?
